Our hard working, busy executive at the April 2008 EC meeting.

From Our President - Judy Brayden

jbrayden@xplornet.com

October 15, 2008

Hello colleagues:

Wow…another great Fall Chapter Show!  Congratulations award winners and to everyone for a job well done!  A special and well deserved thanks to the Show and Publicity committee members; Helen Webster, Gail deCaux, (working from her sickbed!), Gail Johnson, Dorothy Sevcov, Mickie Acierno, Barbara Scott Judith Gilley, Pat Hart, Jean Rhodes, Alda Saunders, Marianne Fleming, Vicki Turner, Terry Nimmon and Grahame Arnott.  Also thanks to our jurors: Don Farrell (SFCA), Mickie Acierno (SFCA) and Mary Stewart (AFCA).

As you know as of Nov. 15, Helen Webster is finished her term as Show Committee Chair, and that this was causing many of us concern (Helen is a tough act to follow).  However, as promised, Helen will serve as 2nd vice president this next term so that she can guide and mentor our new chair:  Sharon Stone. Sharon shadowed Helen on registration day and within a few minutes was an integral part of the very efficient committee….she’s going to be great!  Thank you so much Sharon, for your enthusiasm and your commitment to continued high quality chapter shows!

Speaking of executive positions:  publicity will need some ad hoc volunteers as Grahame will be away some of the winter:  email Helen and or Sharon if you can be of any service as the Gallery 223 Small Paintings Show is coming up soon.  The Gallery will publicize this venue through their network, but there are jobs that our chapter always has to oversee.  A special thanks to acting secretary, Bernice Sutton, for filling in for vacationing Nancy Gayou.

Breaking news:  we have a healthy bank balance and the EC is looking for any and all ideas for additional items/directions/processes that we can buy, sponsor, or undertake with our tiny surplus.  I will be taking ideas at the Nov. 15th meeting so put on your thinking caps, and should you be like me and fret about forgetting your brilliant idea, send it via e mail to me asap. All ideas, regardless of cost, will be discussed and prioritized in light of our NFCA goals at the December executive meeting.

Thanks again for being a vibrant member of our chapter.  See you on the 15th of November (remember – not the second but third Saturday in November) for the Sarah Kidner workshop and annual general meeting of our chapter!

November 2008

One year ago, at our 2007 AGM, the go ahead was given for an expanded, custom website for our Chapter. With this decision came a move away from our traditional newsletter and the obvious space constraints that come with a paper publication.  Now with unlimited space for text and photographs, our on-line newsletter has evolved into a vital, vibrant and very effective source of constantly updated information for our members.  It has become the place to go for our calendar, workshop information, news and pictures of shows, member events (and brags!), current member list, calls for entry, and entry and registration forms to download and print.

In the ten months since it’s launch in January 2008 there have been over 3500 visitors to this site.  In it's first week, the on-line version of our Fall Juried Show had over 100 views.

A condensed version of our newsletter is still available in paper form, published five times a year, and available on the website to download and print.

With over 100 members in our Chapter it would be a full time job for the newsletter editor to follow the current events of each individual member and report on their achievements.   The onus is on the members to submit information for inclusion on the website and in the print newsletter.  It is easy for members to check the website to see if their particular news item has been reported yet. If they don't see it on the website, then they need to let me know that they would like it to be included.  It’s easy to do. Simply e-mail news items to silverisle@shaw.ca - with a picture or two if available- and it will appear on the website.

Members may also send information on upcoming shows as well as any workshops or lessons they provide.

There is no submission deadline for the on-line version of our newsletter.   Items are added to the website as they are received, and if the item is still current at deadline time for the print newsletter, it will appear there too.

Deadlines for the PRINTED version of the newsletter are as follows...
March 15th (March/April issue)
April 15th (May/June issue)
Aug 15th (Sept/Oct issue)
Oct 15th (Nov/Dec issue)
**(there is no July/August issue)
Dec 15 (Jan/Feb issue)

Also part of the new website is a section devoted to individual member pages.  All active members of the Chapter have their own page on our website, with a biography section, links, and photos of their work.  Many members have already sent in their images and bio, and now have pages on the site.  You can find them by visiting the Members page and scrolling over the list of names.  Those with own page will show up as a live link.  However, there are still quite a few members who have not yet taken advantage of this feature of our new website.  It is important to note that there is no extra charge for this service.  It is included in your annual Chapter dues.

Each member may submit up to six images of their work, a biography (if they choose), an e-mail link and a link out to their own personal website, if available.  Members may include whatever sort of information they chose in their bio, such as contact information, gallery representation, etc.

Images and biography are submitted via e-mail to silverisle@shaw.ca

Send ONE image per e-mail.  (If you have six images, you will send six separate e-mails)  Don’t forget to include your bio information in one of the e-mails.  Please include the following information with each image you send:

  1. Title
  2. Image Size
  3. Medium
  4.  Available for purchase / price /”Sold” / Private Collection / etc..

Digital images may be sent in any if the following formats:  .jpg .png .bmp .pdf .  Images should be sent in as large a format as possible and they will be resized to fit the web site.  Images will be reduced in resolution in order to discourage image theft. This way they will look good on a computer screen but will not reproduce well on paper.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the website, and don’t forget to check it regularly for updates and additions.

11:30 a.m.: We will have a short break and then eat our own bag lunches through a one hour business meeting.  We will highlight new members, members in the news and show direction.  All reports will be posted on the website and it will be your responsibility to read them….the business meeting will be your chance to ask any questions and to bring up any other ideas that you may have, but the reports will not be repeated at the meeting.

John MacNeill, AFCA
1918 - 2008

John MacNeill, AFCA, was born March 25, 1918, in Northern Ontario. He enjoyed a successful career as a geologist and businessman. He married in 1946 and in 1972, retired with his wife Eleanor, to West Vancouver. He then turned his talents and energy to art, and his watercolours of the West Coast continue to be collected around the world. In 1981, he was awarded the status of Associate Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. In 1992, John came to Nanaimo, BC and remained there until he passed away peacefully on March 11, 2008.
It is with heavy hearts that the past and present members of the Nanaimo Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists, mourn the passing of this wonderful man. John and his artist daughter, Denise, were often at our chapter meetings together. We witnessed the special love and friendship between father and daughter, the shared passion for painting, the support for the art community, and an unfailing commitment to the FCA.
We all learned from and admired John’s work; water, trees and rocks spilled off the end of his paint brush leaving us with everlasting memories of Coastal BC and the man who painted this landscape for many years. Always ready to help, give a little advice, or offer an opinion, we all indebted to him, and we are all going to miss John MacNeill very much.

FCA Events Update : October

We’ve been very busy at Federation head office, and I apologize for being out of the loop for so long.

As you have all received the new FCA show rulings decisions made by the Standards Committee, I sincerely hope that you are happy with the changes.  I know that some of these changes have been long over due and will be a benefit to you and your chapter. I certainly haven’t heard anything from you to indicate otherwise. If you do have any problems that I might help you with, please let me know. These changes are a direct result of the Chapter Survey that you all participated in 2007, so thank you again to all of you that took part.

One of the changes was the red frame that goes around the card that is placed beside or under the painting, stating that this is a “FCA Qualifying Painting”.   Attached  is a new frame that we think will be seen a little better with the black printing instead of the white.

I used the frame myself at the last Fraser Valley show in August, and they were quite effective.  I printed them out on glossy photo paper so that they could be saved and used again.

We’ve also had some inquiries from members in Ottawa and Chetwynd B.C., about how to start a chapter. Maybe in the future we will see a chapter in Northern B.C., and one in eastern Canada. That would be exciting news.

CONGRATULATIONS, to those of you who were accepted into the Art Visions 2008 Open Show in Kelowna. I understand they had over 350 applicants from six provinces and one state in the U.S.  We wish the Central Okanagan Chapter good luck and hope to see this become a yearly occurrence.

The Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony is on the 25th of October, from 1:00PM to 4:00PM, in Kelowna.

A Note to all Chapters; The FCA had only 67 entries to the Northern Lights Chapter Show this year, which is way down from last year.  With such few entries we stand a very real chance of losing the Chapter Show as part of the FCA show line up.

I also need to advise all of you that the Chapter Manual has been taken off the FCA web site, due to all of the up-dating the Manual requires as a result of the many show changes that have taken place of late. We hope to be finished in the not to distant future, so stand by. In the mean time if you have any questions or problems regarding chapter rules or procedures, please direct them to me.

Our web site is also receiving some major changes, and we hope you will like the changes and agree that the site is much more accessible.

Happy Painting Everyone,
Heidi Lambert   AFCA
Chapter Liaison, FCA

The first work to be completed this fall by Norma Jackson was a portrait of Harold C. Joe, the Aboriginal Film Maker.

"I first saw Harold and his film “Traditional Fishing on the Cowichan River” at the Aboriginal Film Festival in 2004.  His spirit and love for his culture and people dug deep reawakening my own experiences.  I had been given the privilege of being taught for 15 years by a Tsimsian spiritual teacher and healer who had transformed my life.   One of the things she passed on to me was the love of the culture and spiritual ways of the First Nations People.

My second encounter with Harold was at the 2008 Aboriginal Film Festival reception.    I was compelled to ask him if he would be willing to have me paint his portrait. Harold’s face depicts not only the struggles of the past but the strength and beauty of spirit that has arisen in his films.   I wanted to somehow capture the spiritual beauty I saw there.

That began a friendship and a journey that resulted in his portrait with a Red Tailed Hawk.  After several meetings, the gathering of images and sharing of stories, it was time to start.  There was a moment during a presentation to an aboriginal class that Harold’s gaze drifted to another place.  It was the right image.

Harold told me how The Red Tailed Hawk has a powerful and personal meaning to him.    In the native spiritual tradition, the hawk represents a "messenger".    As he was speaking, I saw that Harold himself was the Hawk or "messenger" bringing his peoples stories to life in film.  It was a reflection of the days with my Tsimsian teacher when we too had brought stories and issues to life with marionette theatre to teach, inspire and promote healing.

One night, during sleep, the Red Tailed Hawk appeared as a presence to me.  I knew I couldn't paint Harold without painting the hawk."

The unveiling of the portrait took place in the theatre at the Native Cultural Centre in Duncan following a presentaton of his film on the homeless called "Broken Down".  Profits on the sale of Prints and Cards will be given to the current needs of the homeless.  Anyone interested, please call me at (250) 701-0808.

Nanaimo FCA Shows Report - Helen Webster

OCTOBER 15, 2008

The NFCA Fall Juried (Qualifying) Show will hang in the Nanaimo Art Gallery, Downtown, until October 28.  Please find time to go vist the Gallery to view the Show, and let others know about it. 66 pieces were entered, 28 are hanging in the Show, of these, all are Qualifying paintings. A reminder that the FCA guidelines state that an artist may earn ONE point per Show toward Signature status regardless of the number of his/her paintings that qualify in that Show. Also, an artist may earn only TWO points per Chapter per year, no matter how many qualifying shows the Chapter may hold.   Please pick up any unsold paintings on Tuesday, October 28, anytime through the day. The Gallery opens at 10:00 AM and closes at 5:00 PM. Congratulations to those who entered and qualified, and many, many thanks to all those who helped in so many ways. Publicity Report - Grahame Arnott

September 8, 2008

Good progress is being made for the Fall Show. To date, two newspapers have said they will do "interest articles" with three of our members.

At the moment, work is still underway with a radio and a TV station for on-air interviews. I have also sent in several "community/calendar Announcements" to several newspapers and two magazines. Some have already been printed!

The posters are ready for public distribution throughout the greater Nanaimo area.

Points on Jurying

POINTS ON JURYING - Pat Holland, SFCA

To be juried is a growth procedure the FCA has set up for both you and me. We are being assessed by our peers and in so doing being trained to assess ourselves. Each time we submit a piece we critique it to the best of our ability at that point. So, how do we critique ourselves? My approach is a simple one. Before I finish painting I ask myself three questions about the piece:

Is it simple (don't pick, Pat)
Is is intense? (strength of colour, composition)
Is is clear? (where is my focal point and what is it's name)

and I'm sure that, if I'm juried out, of of those three possibilities is not working and it has not reached up and grabbed that juror.

As a juror, I am looking for the following:

Originality
Interesting composition
Technical achievement
Simple Statement

We all have our prejudices, which are usually held in check with the preceding four criteria. However, one can paint with all this "correctness" but have a DEAD result. For this reason I have a further search when looking at a new work. I look for a personality, an energy, a piece of the artist that shines in the format, and sometimes it isn't technically correct, but speaks to me in spite of it's lop-sided drawing or whatever. I like to see spirit in work. This is achieved in so many ways - varying brush strokes, interrupting line, interesting angles, repetition of shape etc. When working from photos, these pitfalls often occur because of the flatness of photography. One has to create space in our work for, after all, we aren't painting to make pictures! We are really painting for a high - a rush, or a heightened sense of well-being, and a search for a presence outside ourselves that touches our self-consciousness for just a little while. When this happens, no jury in the world can tell us this expression we have captured is not acceptable. We many not get into a particular show, but we must realize that we have reached a further goal in our own growth that may not have been recognized by others. This is not a negative in our journey. Perhaps in further submissions our message could be simplified, intensified or clarified further. I know, because I am trying to do just that.... daily. There is forever room for improvement.

ArtSpace, at Gallery 223

As some of you may be aware, George Leschuk has renovated the upstairs gallery space at Gallery 223, and is now offering for rent a number of "mini galleries". They are bright, clean, attractive, well lit display spaces and they provide excellent downtown exposure. Each mini gallery has a window for natural light, a glass paned door that the artists can lock and of course, plenty of wall space. Gallery 223 staff handle sales so artists don't have to be there. A small handling fee is charged on sales.

Larry Frieson, new NFCA member (some of you may have met Larry at the Summer Show) has rented one of these Mini Galleries. He will share this wonderful space with 9 additional artists. $50.00 per month will give each artist hanging space of approximately four feet by seven feet , which is enough room to hang a number of paintings depending on their size.

A number of FCA artists have already joined Larry in this gallery venture, but there is room for more.

For more information, contact Larry at friesontl@shaw.ca

Thank you to JUDITH MADSEN who conceived the idea of setting up this gallery and who did the initial research and brainstorming that eventually lead to its formation.
