Gail deCaux, a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists since 1991, died on Sunday evening, November 22, 2009.
Gail demonstrated courage and good humor throughout her long battle with cancer, refusing to be anything but positive and cheerful. Gail and her husband Greg moved to Nanaimo from Calgary where she had played an active role in the Calgary Chapter of the FCA for seven years, assuming the role of president for 1995 and 1996. Gail continued to contribute her time and energy to the Nanaimo Chapter FCA in the dual roles of 1stVP and Treasurer. She also organized shows and assisted with the show registration committee, including the Fall Show of 2009. In recognition of her extraordinary service to the NFCA, Gail was awarded an Honorary Life Membership, of which she was very proud. Gail will be remembered by everyone who knew her for her sweet nature, her unfailing kindness to all and her beautiful art. www.gaildecaux.com |

Nelly Kazenbroot has been selected as a finalist in THE KINGSTON PRIZE, Canada's National Portrait Competition. Paintings by all 30 finalists will be on display at exhibitions in four cities from October 2009 to April 2010. The exhibitions will begin Oct. 9 in Kingston, Ontario and then move to: Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia; Waddington's Fine Art Auction House in downtown Toronto; and The Art Gallery of Calgary. A jury of art critics and art historians will announce the winner of The Kingston Prize of $10,000 and two Honourable Mention awards of $1000 each at the Gala Preview at the Grand Theatre in Kingston, on October 8. As well, a "People's Choice" award will be presented in each of the participating cities.

Nelly's entry, "Nothing But Blue Skies", is an acrylic-on-canvas portrait of her son, Sebastian. Like many of her recent paintings, it contains a subtle twist of surrealism that carries the image beyond the boundaries of classic realism.

With over 100 members in our Chapter it would be a full time job for the newsletter editor to follow the current events of each individual member and report on their achievements. The onus is on the members to submit information for inclusion. It’s easy to do. Simply e-mail news to silverisle@shaw.ca - with a picture or two if available- and it will appear on the website.
Members also encouraged to send information on upcoming shows as well as any workshops or lessons they provide.
There is no submission deadline. Items are added to the website as they are received.
New members are encouraged to submit a bio and images for inclusion in the member pages.
Click here for detailed information on how to do this.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the website, and don’t forget to check it regularly for updates and additions.

Hello colleagues:
As you know at the September 12th general meeting, NFCA attendees will be choosing three pieces of art to commemorate the Legacy 25 commitment to the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation. As you recall Helen sent you an email with the particulars, which I have included below. I know that you have all busy meeting the August 6 digital submission deadline for the fall show, but now is also the time in which to make your intentions known if you are planning to bring a piece to the meeting. Please let me (Judy Brayden) know by September 1st, 2009, if you are bringing a painting for consideration. (email: jbrayden@xplornet.com or phone 250 701-0570
The members of the Legacy 20 Committee worked hard on your behalf and are very excited about the donation process. Please give this serious consideration. Each member may submit one, previously juried piece (including pieces accepted in the Fall 2009 show). From our three finalists, Maeve O’Bryne, president of the Hospital Foundation, will make the final selection of our 2009 donation. Let’s see a real commitment to excellence in the Legacy 25 concept and in our commitment to the important work in our community of the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation.
Judy Brayden
On behalf of the Legacy 20 and 25 Committee members
IMPORTANT information regarding the 2009 NFCA donation of a painting to the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation (NDHF).
At the May General Meeting the membership voted in favor of a motion to donate one painting by an NFCA member each year for the following 5 years, to the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation.
The process to be followed for 2009 is as follows
1. Any NFCA member may donate any of his/her paintings, with one condition: The painting must have been juried into any FCA Chapter Qualifying Show, or into an FCA Vancouver Show, and is designated as Qualifying, formerly known as Jurors’ Choice. This includes the upcoming Nanaimo Fall Juried Show, as results of this Show will be available by the end of August.
2. Artist/members are asked to bring paintings they wish to be considered for the donation to the hospital foundation to the September 12 NFCA General Meeting (one painting per artist, please) at the Nanaimo Art Gallery by 9:30 am. Please let Judy Brayden know by September 1st, 2009, if you are bringing a painting for consideration.(e mail or phone)
3. Each painting will be numbered and displayed, and, between 9:30 and 10:00 am, all members present will be given a secret ballot on which to indicate their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice. Ballots will be collected at 10:00 am, just before the Demo (Success Show) begins.
4. From this secret vote, a shortlist of 3 paintings will be determined.
5. At the close of the meeting, members of the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation will choose from the shortlist this year’s painting for donation to the NDHF. The selected artist will receive a tax donation receipt for the value of the painting from the Hospital Foundation. If the painting is valued at over $999.00 the NFCA will pay an appraiser to confirm its value for tax purposes, and a receipt will be issued to the artist.
6. Early the following week, Larry Frieson, our Publicity chair will arrange for publicity for the selected painting and artist.
7. Finally, the formal presentation of the donated painting to the NDHF, with attendant publicity, will take place at the Opening and Awards Ceremony of the NFCA Fall Show. September 24, 7 - 9 pm at the NAG. This presentation will be part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Nanaimo Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Nanaimo Chapter (Federation of Canadian Artists)
News Release
August 31, 2009
LEGACY 20
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Nanaimo Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists. With this anniversary, the Chapter has added another important direction to its goals and achievements.
The Chapter has always had mandates to connect artists within the community (for support, camaraderie, motivation, focus etc.), to expose the community to art and reinforce its importance within the community. In addition, the Chapter is proud to announce its Legacy 20.
To commemorate this special anniversary, the one hundred plus Chapter members have decided to give back to the community by creating this Legacy 20 program. This program begins with what will be an annual donation of original art work to the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation which will culminate in 2013 with the 25th anniversary celebration of the Nanaimo Chapter. The donated pieces will become the property of the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation, as it fundraises for and furnishes the new renal ward and emergency hospital in Nanaimo.
At the opening reception of the NFCA Fall 2009 juried show, a representative from the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation was presented with the first piece of donated juried art, selected by the Chapter members. The official awards ceremony and reception will be September 24th 7-9 pm (with the NDHF presentation at 8 pm). Present at the reception will be a special guest list of past Chapter presidents and other community dignitaries. The Liz LeBaron Trio will enhance the evening with its musical performance. As well, the winners of the juried show will be recognized.
The Chapter Show opens on September 23rd and runs until October 10th at the Nanaimo Art Gallery (150 Commercial St).
The public is welcome to attend the show and the reception. This is a chance for the public to be further exposed to and understand the Legacy 20 program, and to appreciate the talent of established and emerging artists from the Central Island area. |
