We are pleased to have our three jurors, Dene Croft , SFCA, Leslie Gregory Morgan, SFCA and John Stuart Pryce, AFCA, offer demos on Saturday, November 2, in the meeting room of the Nanaimo Museum. A maximum of 25 can attend to offer high quality of interaction between the attendance and the demo artist. You can purchase an all-day pass for all three demos for the cost of $25 on a first come first served basis. Please access our website ww.nanaimofca.com and locate the “square” icon on the upper right hand side of the menu bar. You can then pay for the demoscapes with your credit card. Coffee and tea, and snacks will be offered.

The session schedule is as below:

10 am: Greetings and Introductions

10.15 a.m. to 11. 45a.m. : Dene will be covering numerous subjects - from preparation of the substrate, composition, underpainting - 16th century technique including grisaille, alla prima, sfumato and glazing. The points and focus of the demo will be many and varied. Dene loves teaching and always encourage a lot of dialogue and questions, so the focus of the demo often shifts around. Time permitting, Dene will use either or both a landscape and a portrait.

12.45 p.m. to 2.15 p.m. : John will send details in a few weeks. John is adept at discussing brushes, material, the use of layers, a play light and dark. Stay posted for details.

2.30 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Leslie will focus on the initial steps toward energizing a blank surface until your imagination can take over and present you with a direction. Because abstract art is like “beginning a sentence before you know the ending”, the most daunting step is the beginning. Because there’s no preconceived idea of what the painting should look like, you’re free to experiment and indulge in making something that reflects who you are. Leslie begins this process using collage materials, lots of paint and textured elements which are then partially sanded or scraped down and then more collage, paint and texture added. The materials used are those found around your home or the local hardware store.
