Artist Biography
Like many people I have felt an affinity for nature for as long as I can remember - a fondness reinforced by enjoyable, humbling, awe-inspiring, and even spiritual outdoor experiences in myriad activities.Curiosity about the natural and built environment led me to a diploma in architecture, a bachelor's degree in fine arts, and master's level research in environmental design, Supported by a forty-year career in real estate development, design and project management, my life-long artistic journey is rooted in landscape.
Mid-career university studie galvanized exploration of nature, light, colour, composition, paint movement and conceptual abstraction. As a seasoned designer, builder and artists - described by friends and colleagues as a 'life-long learner' and a 'builder at heart' practiced in 'distilling the complicated into the more easily understood' - my intent is to meld experience with idea, method with material, heart with head and hand.
No residing in the seaside village of Craig Bay, my wife Jackie and I are happily embracing active living along with our black lab Ozzie Bear, and I look forward to the next chapters of an evolving art practice on Vancouver Island as a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists working in collaboration with the vibrant Oceanside arts community.

Influenced by the campaigns of JMW Turner, Tom Thomson, Ansell Adams and Gerhard Richter, many of whom challenged the prevailing aesthetics of their times, my art practice embraces conceptual innovation and method refinement with the goal of creating unique nature-based contemporary mixed-media artwork - drawing upon my experience in world travel, photography, design, sculpture and oil painting.
While much of my artwork was produced in Calgary, we were also priveleged to live for several years on the west coast, sailing frequently with family amongst the Gulf Islands. We were fortunate as well to travel internationally and throughout most of Canada, often with our children and grandchildren - discovering artistic inspiration from a wealth of sources.
My mixed-media images strive to reveal the tactile effects of oil paint layered, dragged and rubbed on anodized aluminum or over personal photographs applied to aluminum panels. LuminalArt starts in nature, juxtaposes oil and ink, catched changeable light in luminous metal, and resides between the realms of realism, impression and abstraction. At their best I hope theses works challenge the viewer to consider what is real or imagined, what is tangible or remembered, what holds static or reflects altering light, what is fleeting or lasting.
