Marika Morissette
Artist Bio:

Marika Morissette is a visual artist based in Burnaby, BC, celebrated for her vibrant acrylic pour paintings. Driven by a passion for creating original artwork that uplifts and inspires, Marika’s creative journey began in childhood with oil painting classes, choir singing, piano lessons, and school theatre. Although her love for the arts was always present, she pursued a different professional path, earning a B.A. in Communication Studies with honours from Concordia University and building a successful career as an executive assistant for over 20 years.

In 2021, Marika made the bold decision to leave the corporate world, dedicating herself fully to her artistic pursuits and family. While she had painted occasionally throughout her life, it was in 2019 that she discovered the captivating world of fluid art. She is drawn to this abstract style for its unpredictability and the sense of wonder it evokes. Marika’s distinctive creations, marked by colourful cells and dynamic patterns, are crafted using techniques such as blowing, puddle pours, swipes, and balloon kisses, often incorporating silicone oil to achieve stunning effects.

Marika is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, including the Fraser Valley and Nanaimo Chapters, and holds memberships with several regional arts organizations, including the Burnaby Artist’s Guild, Arts Council of Surrey, North Van Arts, Langley Arts Council, Bowen Island Arts Council, South Delta Artists Guild, and West Vancouver Community Arts Council.

Her work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions over the past four years. Notably, she was awarded second place in the nationwide Golden Celebration Juried Art Exhibition at Gallery 1710 for her piece “Birch Kaleidoscope.” Through her art, Marika finds freedom and joy, striving to inspire others to embrace creativity in their own lives. Her paintings are available for purchase on Etsy under the shop name MarikaFluidArt.

Artist Statement:

I am deeply passionate about creating original, beautiful artwork that invites viewers into a space of creativity and hope. My paintings are often described as unique and intriguing, reflecting my commitment to exploring new ideas and embracing the limitless possibilities that art offers.

I’m fascinated by organic structures, dynamic movements in nature, and vivid colours that bring energy to my works. My art evokes natural phenomena and invites viewers to find deeper meanings and intriguing interpretations, from the ethereal and spiritual to the visceral and sensory. I invite viewers to reflect on the intrinsic beauty and fluidity of the natural world, and to find symbolic connections and deeper meanings in my abstract works of art.

Each time I approach a canvas, I experience a sense of play and discovery. Pour painting, in particular, is a liberating process for me - it allows me to “go with the flow,” both literally and metaphorically. As I pour, blend, and torch the paint, I trust in the unfolding journey, feeling excitement and anticipation rather than fear about what the future holds. The Universe feels supportive, and I am energized by the prospect of vibrant colors merging, cells forming, and patterns emerging in unexpected ways.

This process is more than a technique; it is a living metaphor for embracing change and taking risks. I set the emotional tone for each piece by carefully selecting colours and methods, then allow the artwork to evolve organically. The transformation that occurs on the canvas mirrors my own openness to new opportunities and personal growth.

Pour painting has become a spiritual practice for me, offering therapeutic benefits and a sense of gratitude. I am exhilarated by the magical appearance of cells and patterns, which seem to manifest intuitively before my eyes.

My hope is that viewers will feel an emotional connection to my work. I strive to create pieces that uplift and inspire, using vivid, energizing colours to stimulate optimism and joy.
