Sharon Lennox SSA SFCA

Sharon lives in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.

She is an established scratchboard artist, specializing in birds, wildlife and pet commissions. The detail that can be achieved with this medium is what drives her to create the most realistic paintings possible. All Sharon's paintings are based on her own photos, with the exception of some commissions.

Sharon earned her Signature Scratchboard Artist level, with the International Scratchboard Society in 2016. Winning the International Artist Award with Fishing on Stilts in Berea Kentucky was a big highlight for her in 2019.

April 2023, Sharon applied for her next level with the Federation of Canadian Artists. She earned her Senior Signature Status level. Sharon was thrilled and honored to earn this prestigious award.

Over the years, Sharon has had many paintings juried into open and scratchboard shows. Her paintings have sold locally, across Canada and Internationally.

When I first started painting, oil was the medium I was introduced to by a local art teacher. Without a doubt, I knew realism was going to be my style and passion.

I tried acrylic, did several pieces but went back to oils. I felt I could learn more and master oils better than acrylic. Spending several years learning how oils preformed, understanding the medium and perfecting my style, people started recognizing my work.

I painted mostly birds and animals. No matter how detailed my paintings were, I always felt I wanted and needed more detail. This lead me to do a lot of searching for a medium that could truly satisfy my desire for extreme detail.

Then I discovered scratchboard. My journey working in scratchboard started in 2013. I've worked hard to master this amazing medium. Every year, from my early simple black and white pieces, to the present more complicated highly coloured paintings, my work has consistenly showed progress.

For me, scratchboard is the perfect medium for birds and animals, birds are my subject of choice. Understanding the types of feathers on a bird, what purpose that feather serves and getting that accuracy in a painting, is like doing a jigsaw puzzle, everything must fit. I want my painting to have the feeling of being alive and begging to be touched!
