About Susanne
Susanne was born and raised in Ontario and in 2007 moved out to Vancouver Island with her husband. After 30 years of not painting, she picked up the paint brush. While being primarily self-taught, Susanne enjoys learning new techniques through art courses with prominent artists. Her medium is acrylic and she paints daily in her home studio. Currently she is working on new subject matter with the continuous goal to develop her own style. She also returns to her love, pet portraits.
She has exhibited in numerous group and juried exhibitions. Her work is held in private collections across Canada, the United States, England and Ireland.
Susanne uses the paint brush as a tool to tell the story of a beloved pet, landscape, figure or still life. Her goal is to capture the mood or personality of her subjects and to create a painting that you will cherish forever. As you will see she emphasizes detail in her paintings and brings the subject to life. Susanne captures a feeling or that fleeting moment in time using light, shadow and colour.
Having a passion for art has enabled her to present a variety of subject matter, allowing you the luxury of purchasing your very own "Island" original.
Susanne is an Exhibiting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Arrowsmith and Nanaimo Chapters. Previous member of the Society of Canadian Artists.
Artist Statement:
I paint when a subject gives me excitement. That excitement transposes onto the canvas. Evidence of each layer of paint is visible, revealing the painting’s journey. As the painting evolves, I add paint and turn the canvas upside down to change my perception. Bright colours and detail are very characteristic of my work. When I paint an animal, I focus on the eyes so they portray the character. In a water scene I focus on the subject that is immersed in the water. When created it looks real. I emphasize detail in my paintings and bring the subject to life. I capture a feeling or that fleeting moment in time using light, shadow and colour.
