Artist Bio:
Sylvie was born in Hull, Quebec and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. She moved to the West coast in her early 20s. Her artistic influences began early when she became a frequent visitor at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa. She loved to paint and draw as a young person but, it wasn't until she retired from her work life as yoga instructor, nurse, and web developer/designer, that she was able to return to her first love of “art.”
Sylvie started as a self-taught artist and then completed many workshops and courses and anticipates many more. Her previous careers and curious personality have taught her to trust her intuition and be a lifelong learner. In keeping up with technology, and with an eye for design and color, she quickly adapted to her environment and developed skills which set the stage for her current art career. She enjoys the challenges of painting and drawing with a variety of media, always learning new techniques along the way. She loves the surprises she finds especially while creating and revisiting her abstract work. Sylvie shows her work in several galleries, in member shows and juried shows.
She is the founder of Oceanside11art group, a member of DeCosmos Fine Art group, and an active member of the Canadian Federation of Artists (Arrowsmith and Nanaimo chapters).
Artist Statement:
My creative process begins with an idea, emotion, or a curious intent to explore themes or mediums and the desire to artistically mine them. After choosing a medium and format, I start with a well-prepared substrate and then build layers of paint and materials to create the depth and texture inherent in my work. I am inspired to merge vibrant colors, use strong and bold mark making and use negative or positive painting. Every move informs the next until I discover meaning and balance in the work.
My current work explores contemporary themes and techniques utilizing mixed media, collage, color, and composition. I primarily work with acrylics, collage, cold wax/oils and alcohol inks/resins. These mediums give me great flexibility with abstract, land/ seascape, floral or figurative paintings. My intention when I start a painting is to be authentic and let my muse surprise me.
I reside in the Parksville/Qualicum Beach area and am an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (Nanaimo and Arrowsmith Chapters). I am also the founder of Oceanside11 Art Group and a member of the DeCosmos Fine Art Society.
My work has been shown at the TOSH (The Old School House) Qualicum Beach; the MacMillan Art Centre, the Beach Club Hotel, Parksville; Vancouver Island Conference Center, Nanaimo Fine Arts Show; Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery; Kitty Coleman Fall Artisans Festival, Comox; The Brant Festival, Parksville; TOSH’s Art in Action Fair during the Grand Prix d’Art; Art Alchemy, Artful: The Gallery, Courtenay; and the FCA Vancouver galleries in juried and group shows.
